My Corner Of The Universe

Hello!

Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the virtual universe. I’m grateful and humbled by your interest in my work. Please kick off your virtual shoes and stay awhile.

By way of introduction, I am a Christian who is constantly amazed at God’s grace and mercy toward me through Jesus Christ. My beautiful wife, Kelly, and I are blessed with four precious kiddos who make us smile and laugh—and yes, shake our heads—every day.

After working for nearly 11 years as a sports writer/editor at several newspapers in Maryland, I made a career switch in 2007 and took a job in the children’s ministry at Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Md., where I served as overall director of the ministry for the last four years. This month, we’re packing our bags to move to North Carolina, where I have accepted the children’s minister position at Chapel Hill Bible Church, a wonderful congregation in the heart of Tarheels/Blue Devils country—strange, new territory for a lifelong Maryland Terrapins fan. Working in children’s ministry is fantastic because it allows me to focus fulltime on serving families and teaching kids about Jesus. Plus, there aren’t many jobs where you can get paid to put on costumes and pretend to be an astronaut, a superhero or a 1970s TV show host with a bad toupee.

As my career path shifted away from fulltime journalism, God has continually blessed me with many fantastic writing opportunities. It’s an itch I love to keep scratching. Over the years, I’ve freelanced for many great publications—both secular and faith-based. The subject matter has ranged from an Olympic-level whitewater kayaker to multiple Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw to the so-called “imprecatory” Psalms. Pretty fun stuff. You can check out some of those articles by clicking the “Books” tab above.

In 2010, God opened a new door for me when my friends and fellow authors Jesse Florea and Jeremy Jones asked me to join them in writing The One Year Sports Devotions For Kids (Tyndale House Publishers, 2011). That launched what has been a wonderfully rewarding book-writing career that I hope to continue for many years.

I’d love for you to check out my books, especially my latest project, One Year Devotions With Jesus, that Tyndale will be releasing in October. I’m really excited to see what God does in the hearts of the next generation through this book. You can get a sneak peek and pre-order a copy here.

All that’s to say I love pointing kids and families to the gospel and writing about fascinating people, especially the Savior himself. Dressing up like a pirate for kids and saying “Yaaarrrr!” a lot is pretty fun, too. Hey, it’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.
